Playing Roulette with the Bible- not a good idea

Russian Roulette ? is defined as an act of bravado consisting of spinning the cylinder of a revolver loaded with one cartridge, pointing the muzzle at one’s own head ?, and pulling the trigger.
In other words, it’s a dangerous game in which people fire a gun with a single bullet at their heads without knowing if the bullet will be shot or not. Very foolish indeed, wouldn’t you say.

Too often people have played roulette with the Bible.
Here’s an example of why playing roulette with the Bible is very dangerous when seeking a word from God:
Suppose you, seeking a word from God, lift your closed Bible up into the air with your two thumbs on the pages and pray: “O God, I need a word from You. Please speak to me now.”
And, with eyes closed, you bring your Bible down before you and place it on the table and it falls open to Isaiah 14. And then, with your eyes still closed, you put your finger on the opened page and it lands on verse 9. You then open your eyes and read:
Hell from beneath is excited about you, to meet you at your coming; it stirs up the dead for you…”
Crazy, isn’t it? (I’d be lifting that Bible over my head again, saying: God, I’m gonna give You another opportunity to speak to me.) Actually, I’d have enough sense to discern that is not a wise way to seek a word from God.
Or what if someone opened to Jonah 1: 2 and read: “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”
See what I mean? And this sort of thing actually happens.
And though God has spoken to people in that way before, it is very rare and it’s definitely not something He does with anyone on a regular basis.

And as you probably know, there’s a much more safer and consistent way to hear from God from within the Bible, than the roulette way. And this is our LIGHT encouragement for today.
image1From Psalm 119:
11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
15 I will meditate on Your precepts, and contemplate Your ways.
24 Your testimonies also are my delight and my counselors.
47 And I will delight myself in Your commandments, which I love.
50 This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life.
97  Oh, how I love Your law (word)! It is my meditation all the day.

As we can see from these statements from David, it’s quite obvious he did not play roulette with God’s word. This shows us that it’s really important that our Bible reading is consistent and our interpretation of it is accurate. It should be our daily bread, our constant light and delight, our counselor, meditation and life support.
We will also find God speaking to us more often the more we read His Word systematically and with a searching and teachable spirit.

Power Truth: Study diligently to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2: 15).
